What is fluency?
Fluency is the ability to read with speed, accuracy and proper expression. Children must be able to read fluently in order to have comprehension. If children do not read fluently, which means it sounds choppy and awkward, they can lose the meaning of the text. Children sometimes have difficulty with fluency because they are unable to decode the words. When children become more fluent with their reading, they will also be more motivated to read challenging texts.
What strategies are used to help me decode words?
Decoding is the ability to correctly pronounce written words. Children are able to decode words by using their knowledge of letter-sound relationships and letter patterns even if they have not seen the word before. Phonics instruction is one approach that teachers use to help students understand this concept. Some strategies readers can use when decoding unfamiliar vocabulary are:
1. Look at the picture
2. Get your mouth ready
3. Look for chunks or smaller words in the bigger word
4. Think about what makes sense
5. Reread the sentence
6. Skip the word and come back
What strategies are used to help comprehend stories?
When reading, you can use the Super 6 Reading Strategies to help comprehend (understand)the text:
1. MAKING CONNECTIONS - As you read with your child, are you able to make connections with other books that you have read, with personal experiences or with world events?
2. PREDICT/INFER - Readers comprehend better by making predictions about what they are about to read or by making inferences concerning the material.
3. QUESTION- Asking questions as you read aids in focusing on comprehension.
4. MONITOR/CLARIFY- The reader looks at what they are about to read and makes sure that they understand unknown words and concepts.
5. SUMMARIZE - Summarization should not be a re-telling of all events in the story but a two or three sentence statement covering the most important facts.
6. EVALUATE - Everyone should have some sort of reaction to what has been read. This can be done by discussion, answering the questions created before the reading, discussing the author's purpose and so forth.
